Mock Rescue - May 19, 2015

We had a mock rescue with the entire medical team from HVC.  Guess who got to be the victim?  I had no idea what I was in for!  They used the radio to call for a medical emergency and the medical missionaries came from all over camp.  I said my leg was hurt and they began to stabilize it.  They then proceeded to strap me to a board, even used the neck brace to keep me rigid.  Steve commented he was sure glad it wasn't him!  I'm sure they could not have strapped him down!  They then carried me to an ATV and took me down the hill  Hopefully I won't have to do that one again!

Legacy Lake - May 17, 2015

We were invited by the Evans family to come to the Timber Moose lodge for potluck dinner.  This lodge is very close to the Heber Valley Camp and overlooks the lake.  The lodge sleeps 70 to 100 people!  They say it is rented out for the next 2 years for events such as weddings, corporate meetings, etc.  It seems many people are so good to the Senior Missionaries at HVC.

Heber Valley Camp Missionary Charge

Behold, I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.  I have been called of Him to declare his word among his people, that they might have everlasting life.  (3 Ne 5:13)

Therefore, O ye that embark in the service of God, see that ye serve Him with all your heart, might, mind and strength, that ye may stand blameless before God at the last day.

And faith, hope, charity and love with an eye single to the glory of God, qualify him for the work.

Remember, faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, brotherly kindness, godliness, charity, humility, diligence.

Ask, and ye shall receive, knock, and it shall be opened unto you.  Amen. (D & C 4)

This is the HVC Camp Missionary charge which we recite every morning at our devotional.  We also recite the Young Women Theme each day.

Open House

Saturday, May 16th was our Open House to the public.  At 11:00 am they raised the Young Women Value flags.  There was a small ceremony and it was snowing and freezing cold.  I have learned to dress warm, I had on thermal underwear, both top and bottom, 2 more shirts, a hoody sweatshirt and my coat.

There were 686 cars that came to look at the mountain, to prepare for camp and also future senior missionaries that came to see.  Steve's sister Joyce and her husband Blane came.  It was fun to show them around the camp.

This past week was pretty intense with training.  We did have a lot of fun doing the zip line ourselves, but we have been learning a lot too.  We have all learned to do the belay line.  Steve has been belaying all he can, and he also performed a mock rescue.  On Thursday and Friday, we were required to pass a hands on test and also 2 written tests.  We are now certified as a Skill Level I.  We received our own carabiner and harness.

Work, work, work! - May 9, 2015

There is a lot of work to be done around the camp.  The Challenge Course team volunteered to help remove the dead wood from Camp Abish.  It was snowing!  Many hands make work light, we were able to get done in a couple of hours.

Hanging by a wire - Belaying - May 5, 2015

Elder Duerden has been learning his required knots and hooked up the belay line.  He is harnessed in and gets a little instruction from Elder Poulsen.

Here I am harnessed and ready to climb the pole to the zip line.

We have been getting the Challenge Courses ready, removing dead limbs and spreading around a lot of wood chips.  It's a lot of work for senior couples.  We are tired by the end of the day.

Camp Sunrise - May 3, 2015

Yesterday afternoon, after attending class, we were able to go on a short ride in our ATV.  We went up to a ridge they call Missionary Lookout.  You can see our trailers below.  The name of our camp is Sunrise (lower right) and the other is Sunset.

Today we were able to see two young moose, wandering and eating in Camp Eliza R Snow.  The Staheli's are camp hosts there and they called us on the radio to let us know the moose were there.

Temple Day

Yesterday we went to the Salt Lake City temple with all of the HVC missionaries, the HVC managing brotheren and their wives, and the YW HVC camp presidency.  We were all able to get in the same session.  Afterwards we meet for lunch in the Joseph Smith memorial building.  Sister Marriott of the YM General Board spoke to us.  It was a wonderful day.
